The native peoples of western North Africa, also called the Mauri or (in Arabic) Berbers. They resisted attempts by the Romans and (after 429) the Vandals (q.v.) to subdue them. Belisarios (q.v.) conquered the Vandals (q.v.) in a matter of months in 533, but the war with the Moors dragged on for years until John Troglita (q.v.), another great general of Justinian I (q.v.), subdued them in 548.
